MEE

The Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) is a set of nine essay questions prepared for each bar exam administration by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The MEE is designed to be used as a replacement for one, three-hour session of essay questions that would normally be drafted by a jurisdiction’s Board of Law Examiners.

Each jurisdiction administering the MEE selects the specific questions it wishes to ask of its examinees. The jurisdiction may choose any number of the nine available questions. While most jurisdictions administer the MEE exclusively, others administer MEE questions along with their own questions.

The following subjects are tested on the MEE: Agency and Partnerships, Commercial Paper (Negotiable Instruments), Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Corporations and Limited Liability Companies, Criminal Law and Procedure, Decedents’ Estates, Evidence, Family Law, Federal Civil Procedure, Real Property, Secured Transactions, Torts, and Trusts and Future Interests. Note that this list includes the six subjects tested on the MBE (the multiple choice portion of the exam).

Examinees should allocate 30 minutes for each question. Note that some questions may include issues in more than one subject area.

It is important to mention that National Conference of Bar Examiners writes the MEE; however, the jurisdiction administering the MEE grades it.

Take a look at your jurisdiction to see if the MEE will be part of your exam.
